Work group:
- In a work group all computers are equal.
- It is also known as peer to peer.
- Each computer maintains own set of resources, accounts and security information.
Advantages:
- Easy to share resources.
- Resources are distributed to all machines.
- Simple to design.
- Easy to implement.
- Convenient for small groups in close proximity.
- Less expensive, does not require a central server.
Disadvantages:
- No centralized control of resources, account management, administration and security management.
- Inefficient for more than 20 workstations. Security must be configured manually increased training to operate as both client and server.
Domain:
- Windows domain provide network administrators with a way to manage a large number of PCs and control them from one place.
- One or more servers known as domain controllers have control over the domain and the computer on it.
- Centralized resource sharing, resource control, account management, security management.
- Efficient performance for a virtually unlimited number of of workstations.
- User need to be trained only to use clients.
- Not restricted to close proximity.
Disadvantages:
- Significant administrative effort and overhead.
- Complicated designs: requires advanced planning.
- Requires one or more powerful, expensive servers.
- Absolute security is hard to achieve.
- Expensive for domain controllers increases and access decreases with network size.
- Some understanding of domain networks remains necessary.
- Large scope requires more user documentation and training.
