Pi and its importance in design

π:

  • The number π is a mathematical constant.
  • It is the ratio between the circumference to diameter of a circle.
  • The value of π is approximated as
  • π = 3.142 in decimal.
  • π = 22/7 in fraction.
  • π = 3.141592 in calculator.
  • It is represented in Greek letter.
  • It is spelled out as "pi".
Importance of π in design:
  • π is used for many different tasks and many different professions and assists in different aspects of design work.
  • Circles of different sizes in design are formed by formulae using π.
  • It is used to find the surface area of sphere to find out the amount of metal needed to make a metal sphere in design.

  1. Engineers who design things like tires, pipes, tubes and balls use π in every day life.
  2. Design of cylindrical shapes and circles uses π.
History:
  • Using since mid-18th century.
