Configure a switch

  • When the network router does not have the sufficient ports for connecting more network devices then switch is connected to add extra ports.
  • The process of connecting switch is called as configuration of switch.
  • The switch I used in this process has 8 ports, we can give input to any port and take output from remaining ports.
  • I have connected the input to the first port (port-1) and took output from last port (port-8) connected to a computer.
  • Now switch is connected to the computer.
  • There will be IP configuration in the windows settings to connect the computer to the network.
  • Now login the desktop as administrator.
  • Right-click on the network icon in tray and select "Open Network and Sharing Center".
  • Now click on "Change Adapter Settings".
  • Right-click on Ethernet and select "Properties".
  • Select the option "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and click on properties.
  • If you want get IP address automatically then select "Obtain IP address automatically".
  • If you want to enter IP address manually then select use this IP address option and enter the IP, subnet mask and Default gateway.
  • Now the computer is connected to the network with switch.
